Only a 45-minute drive to the heart of Rio, the Tijuca Forest National Park is a lush urban rainforest teeming with wildlife. Located in the mountains above the city, the park offers stunning views of the surrounding area and several opportunities to see some of Brazil’s most famous species.

The Tijuca Forest was a victim of habitat destruction over the past few hundred years, which has resulted in the forest losing much of its biodiversity. However, over the past few decades, biologists have been working to bring back crucial species such as the howler monkey and agouti to restore the forest’s ecosystem.

This important work is beginning to pay off. This vibrant ecosystem is home to the yellow-footed tortoise, sloths, toucans, and colorful butterflies, as well as countless other bird and reptile species.

Playful golden lion tamarins scurry between branches, and toucans call out as they flit between towering fruit trees. Colorful butterflies and exotic insects populate the undergrowth, while capuchin monkeys peek curiously at visitors.

You can enjoy plenty of space as they take in the panoramic views, as the summit is quite large and rarely crowded.

This is a famous take-off point for Hang Gliders. From the base, take the path through the forest and immerse yourself in wildlife. Here, keep an eye out for the tiny Micos monkey who hops across the branches in small troops.

Bahia

Bahia, nestled along Brazil’s northeastern coastline, is a captivating destination where tropical rainforests, serene beaches, and rich biodiversity converge.
