The Best Time To Visit Croatia
The best time to visit Croatia is May through October as the country’s warm temperatures are complemented by calm waters and lush landscapes.
While you can find things to do in Croatia year-round, the activities that make Croatia such a dreamy destination — like swimming in azure waters, island hopping, relaxing on pristine beaches, and hiking in national parks — are best enjoyed during the summer and shoulder months.
Croatia’s Highlights
Croatia is known for its stunning islands, charming historic towns, natural beauty and culinary delights.
Situated along the Adriatic coastline, Croatia is home to hundreds of spectacular islands scattered in what are often called some of the purest waters in the Mediterranean. Island hopping is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who want to immerse themselves in stunning natural settings and admire unimaginable beauty.
With its history under the control of many great European empires, it’s no surprise that Croatia also boasts a stunning array of cultural wonders. Split and Dubrovnik will be highlights for history buffs and culture enthusiasts, both boasting UNESCO status old towns, charming architecture and vibrant traditions.
Nestled along the northern coast of Croatia, you’ll find the picturesque Istria Peninsula. This beautiful coastal town is famous for its rich modern culture, exquisite culinary scene and fascinating historical monuments.
Croatia opens the door to life’s simple pleasures: dining on freshly caught fish, biking through olive groves, and swimming in crystalline seas. Wherever you go, you’ll have the chance to admire the splendor of past empires, charming red-roofed towns free of large resorts, and abundant natural beauty.

The Best Time To Visit Croatia
We recommend visiting Croatia from May through October…
Visit Croatia In Spring
Croatia’s landscapes come alive in late spring in May. This is a delightful time to explore the country as the weather is warm and the scenery is vibrant.
In the spring, you can expect temperatures across Dubrovnik, Split and the Dalmatian Islands to span 55 – 80° F. While the weather is pleasant, crowds are usually smaller and it is easier to enjoy Croatia’s highlights without the influx of summer tourists. Fewer crowds also ensures a more relaxed pace to your sightseeing in cities like Dubrovnik, Split, and Zagreb.
The favorable weather conditions are perfect for outdoor activities, whether you’re hiking along the coast of Hvar to find quiet coves and historic villages, biking to a winemaker’s home on Korcula Island for a private tasting, or discovering the biggest waterfall in the Plitvice Lakes National Park.
Spring also boasts great conditions for water-based activities as the temperatures across the Adriatic are starting to rise. We recommend snorkeling in the Pakleni Island Archipelago, swimming in hidden coves in Brusje, and relaxing by the shores on pristine beaches.

Visit Croatia In Summer
Most people visit Croatia from June through August when summer is at its peak as this is the ideal time for beach vacations and island hopping. Pleasant temperatures spanning 62 – 87° F are accompanied by little rain.
As the Adriatic Sea reaches inviting temperatures, this is a great time to sail through the Dalmatian Islands on a private yacht or enjoy daily private boating excursions while enjoying your luxury on-land accommodation.

Festivals and cultural events are in full swing during the summer months; we recommend visiting Grožnjan, a tiny Medieval town in the Istria Peninsula that comes alive with music, art festivals and workshops. This town of fewer than 200 people also boasts 20 art galleries.
While the popular destinations can be crowded, the lively atmosphere and vibrant nightlife make it an exciting time to visit. You can step away from the crowds with insider access, such as an exclusive tour of the Ivan Meštrović Gallery in Split with the curator or private tour of olive fields followed by a private olive oil tasting in the charming town of Vela Luka on Korčula Island.
Accompanied by an expert local guide, you’ll also be able to find lesser-visited natural wonder like hidden coves, secluded bays, quiet fishing villages, and peaceful beaches.
So whether you want to immerse yourself in Dubrovnik’s summer cultural festival of music, dance and theater, mingle with international jetsetters at Hvar’s popular beach bars and restaurants, or explore hidden treasures around the Dalmatian Islands, summer is a great time to visit Croatia.
Visit Croatia In Fall
Fall is another fantastic time to visit Croatia. From September through October, you’ll see that the summer crowds have dwindled but the weather remains warm and pleasant. Expect temperatures between 53 – 79° F.
This is the harvest season, making it a great time for food and wine lovers to enjoy unique culinary experiences. Try truffle hunting in Istria, wine tasting on the southern coast of the Pelješac Peninsula, and dining on fresh, local produce at exquisite restaurants.
The Adriatic Sea is still warm enough for swimming, and the beautiful fall foliage adds a picturesque touch to Croatia’s already breathtaking landscapes. The natural settings make a perfect backdrop for outdoor adventures too, like biking through lesser known villages of Hvar, sea kayaking in front of the old walls of Dubrovnik and swimming near the island of Mljet – one of the greenest and most beautiful islands in the Adriatic.
This time of year is also a nice time to visit museums and galleries. Some of our favorites include the private art collections at the Mimara and the Lauba Gallery in Zagreb, the Ivan Meštrović Gallery in Split and the Museum of Icons on Korčula Island.

How To Enjoy A Vacation In Croatia
Croatia and the majesty of its long Adriatic coastline may be experienced north to south, or in reverse, with either a land-based or sea-based itinerary.
You may begin in the city of Split, founded by the Roman emperor Diocletian who built a fortress on the shore of the Adriatic Sea. The city’s Old Town and location of some luxury accommodation options is still called Diocletian’s Palace. Here you can wonder at highlights such as Peristyle Square, the Cathedral of St. Domnius, and the winding passages of ancient palaces.
From Split, depart offshore for a day of private boating among the Dalmatian Islands, ending at your five-star lodgings on charming Hvar Island. Cruise through turquoise waters into hidden groves, beaches, and grottos on your motor yacht as you pass through Komiža, Biševo, Vis Island, and the Pakleni Island Archipelago.
On Hvar itself, you will feel swept back in time as you hike through the countryside, stopping for lunch at a deserted village before exploring Španjola Fortress.
Another day of private boating on the Adriatic can bring you from Hvar back to mainland Croatia and its other historic jewel, Dubrovnik. Along the way, go ashore for sightseeing on Korčula Island and taste fresh oysters at a private estate on the Pelješac Peninsula before ending the day at your luxurious accommodations in Dubrovnik. A picturesque city ripe for exploring on foot and by sea kayak under the ancient walls, Dubrovnik has also gained fame for its sites featured in the “Game of Thrones” series and is a delight for any fan.
You can also extend your journey to Montenegro. Accessible by car or boat, tiny Montenegro invites you to explore its picturesque medieval towns, indulge in specialty spa treatments, and absorb the breathtaking scenery of the area’s protected bays and ancient forests.

Another highlight of Croatia is the Istria Peninsula on the northern coast, with the picturesque fishing town of Rovinj as your seaside base. Istria is renowned for its culinary scene, featuring white truffles and wines, particularly Momjan Muscat. In the coastal town of Pula, you can explore Roman monuments, including a Colosseum-like amphitheater, the Triumphal Arch of the Sergi, and the Temple of Augustus. The region is also celebrated for summertime music and art festivals and workshops.
For the utmost privacy upon the tranquil Adriatic waters, cruise between Split and Dubrovnik on a luxury private yacht. Over several days at sea, visit the highlights of Hvar, Korčula, the Pakleni Islands and the stunning national park of Mljet, with a dedicated crew giving you the flexibility to alter the itinerary when needed and a gourmet chef providing for your culinary desires on board.
